Professional Genealogy Services

Start and End with Family (www.CornandCotton.com)

Your ancestors were more than just names and dates. Let’s discover their stories together.

Whether you need help organizing your own research or would like your family’s story discovered for you, we can achieve your goals together through client-specific project development and individualized attention.

With Corn and Cotton Genealogy you will learn the details of your ancestors’ lives through personal, local, and social history, not just dry facts alone.

My mission is to help families discover the lives of their ancestors.

Professional services include:

Genealogical Research

Let's work together to discover the stories of your ancestors. First, you and I will work together to determine your goals and examine the data that you know. Through both online and offline research techniques, I will help you locate the information required in accordance to the research plan that has been developed uniquely for you. Upon the completion of research and analysis, you will be provided with a detailed report covering all aspects of the project including both positive and negative results; copies, transcriptions, or abstracts of documents as appropriate; and recommendations for future research should you wish to continue learning more. You will receive regular updates via email to keep you informed on the progress of the project. My research services can be combined with other services such as writing, editing, and heritage photography to create a unique and individualized experience. Please see my FAQs for more information including my fee structure.

Research Plans & Analysis

Getting frustrated? Stuck behind a brick wall? Sometimes all you need is a little help to move you further towards your goal. I can evaluate and analyze the data and documents that you've collected through your research, organize it into a clear research plan, and give you steps that will help you attain your goals. Consultations of this type including analysis and the writing of a research plan will be billed at my regular rate of $35 per hour with a minimum of one (1) hour billed. You will receive an additional one (1) hour of analysis and organization at no additional cost as I include a one-hour free consultation with all projects. You get two hours for the price of one!

Heritage Photography

What is Heritage Photography? Simple: Preserving and presenting your family history through photographs.
  • Do you have family history in Ohio? I can provide photographs of the locations important to your family. Imagine having photos of the family homestead today, or collecting photos of the churches, schools, and town squares significant to your ancestors.
  • Do you have your grandmother's photographs in your closet? Let me help preserve these memories by turning them into digital images. Raw and edited versions will be supplied on a cd for you.

Document Retrieval

Do you have records that you need from an Ohio repository or cemetery? I can locate them for you. If an exact source citation is provided, I will locate these at a fee of $10 for the first document and $5 for each additional document. Digital copies, when available, will be provided at no additional charge. However, if a physical paper copy is required client will pay any associated fees. Repositories within 30 miles are not subject to travel fees. Please see Corn and Cotton Genealogy's fee schedule under FAQs for more details.

Freelance Writing & Editing

Are you working on a writing project? I am currently accepting editing projects as well as article and guest post projects related to both genealogy and home education. Would you like to turn your family history research into a book that your family can enjoy? We can work on that together! Contact me for more information.

Social Media

Do you have a genealogy or local history-based society, business, product, or resource? I can help support your organization by establishing and maintaining a strong social media presence within the family history and home education communities utilizing blogging and social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube, etc. Contact me for more details on how I can provide professional services to meet your specific needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why should I hire a professional genealogist?

A: This answer is different for each person. You may want to know your family's history but may not have the interest or time to complete the research yourself. You may have hit the proverbial "brick wall" ancestor and need a little help breaking through. You may live outside of Ohio and need a local researcher to pick up where distance won't allow you to go. Your story is unique to you, and I'd love to help you discover it.

Q: Where do you research?

A: My local area covers archives and repositories within the Central Ohio area. However, I do make regular trips to additional counties and will travel throughout the state as needed. Please see the repository list below for additional information.

Q: What if I only need a little help with my own research?

A: I'll be glad to help you! In addition to my research services, I also provide help with research plans and analysis. Please see this section of my available services in the listing above.

Q: What are your fees?

A: My fees are as follows:
  • Document Retrieval Fees: $10 for the first document and $5 for each additional document if each is clearly cited and identified. Documents not previously identified will be subject to my regular hourly fee billed at 30 minute increments. Travel expenses may be required. Please see the "Travel Expenses" FAQ below for more details.
  • Research Fees: $35 per hour, minimum three (3) hours plus travel expenses if required.
  • Research Plan Creation and/or Research Analysis: $35 per hour, minimum one (1) hour. Travel expenses may be required if we meet in person to review your collected research.
  • Heritage Photography: $35 per hour, minimum one (1) hour plus travel expenses if required.
  • Freelance Writing and Editing: Fees are determined on a per-project basis. Please Contact me for more information.
  • Social Media and Blogging Services: Fees are determined on a per-project basis. Please Contact me for more information.

Q: What are your travel fees?

A: Travel within Franklin County, Ohio is not subject to a travel fee although the client will be responsible for reimbursing any parking fees accrued. However, all travel outside a 30-mile radius of Hilliard, Ohio 43026 will be charged a travel fee of 0.55 cents per mile in addition to any applicable parking fees. I am available for overnight travel should it be requested by the client and required by the project. An additional fee of $100 per night will be assessed to cover additional costs necessary with this type of travel.

Q: Why do I need a contract?

A: Your contract with me (Corn and Cotton Genealogy) is written to accomplish several things:
  1. Outline a clear research plan so that we both understand the project goals.
  2. Make us each aware of all aspects of our full agreement.
  3. List any applicable fees for you in one, easy-to-locate place.
You can read a copy of my contract HERE.

Q: How long will my project take?

A: Our past generations, just like our family today, are all unique. It isn't possible for me to give you a definitive answer without looking first at your past research and discussing your project objectives with you. Together we will create a reasonable research plan so that you can discover your ancestors one relationship at a time. My goal is to help you gain the knowledge that you desire, not extend your project longer than necessary. However, I have found that most family history projects require a minimum of 10 hours to complete it to the client's satisfaction. I do issue one warning: Family History is addictive. Don't be surprised if you have two new questions for each one that you solve!

Q: Can you guarantee results?

A: As much as I would like to promise that we will have a positive result in your search, I simple can not. Genealogical research works with many factors that we can't control. Documents may have been lost or not created at all. What I can guarantee is that I will give your project my full attention and commit all my skills and energy towards helping your reach your project goals. We may even find some surprises along the way that make it an adventure!

Q: Do you offer free consultations?

Q: Yes! Please Contact me to arrange a free one-hour consultation. This consultation can be conducted via telephone, Skype, or email. The purpose will be to review or determine any project objectives you have and discuss how I can help you achieve these goals.

Q: I'm ready to start my family history project. Now what?

A: Please use the Contact form to connect with me. Let me know basic information about your project as well as your preferred method of communication (phone, email, Skype, etc.) It is helpful if you can include a day / time when it is easiest to reach you so that we may be able to schedule your consultation as soon as possible.

"Stephanie edited a series of Kids' Genealogy Books for me, "Branching Out: Genealogy Lessons for ...." These books were written with homeschool parents and public school teachers in mind. Stephanie's expertise in the homeschool area not only helped me finish the books with fantastic edits, but also market in this area in which I was unfamiliar. She is reliable, trustworthy, expedient, creative, and always ready for the next challenge. You cannot go wrong hiring Stephanie to write or edit for you. I highly recommend her services."
